Emily Zhang is a rising senior at Newport High School in Bellevue, Washington. From a young age, Emily has been interested in STEM, and she began her coding experience by learning Java in middle school. Today, she is a CAD Lead of the Newport Robotics group and the President of her school’s Knight’s Who Code club, aiming to teach students of all backgrounds foundational programming skills.
Emily is passionate about getting involved in her school and local community. At school, she is Drum Major of the Newport Pride Marching Band, Captain of the girls golf team, and Secretary of the Youth Legislation Club, a club aiming to create local and state-wide initiatives and legislation. Outside of school, Emily is the President of MissionInspirEd, a student-led nonprofit which provides virtual learning opportunities to K-8 students. She also teaches English at the Northwest Chinese School.
At ISB, Emily collaborated with Omar Aziz and Katie Christensen and was mentored under Dr. Guangrong Qin to create a graph-based API which exposed knowledge graphs of drug, disease, and gene data. Her experience at ISB was extremely valuable, and Emily is extremely grateful to the SEE Team, the Shmulevich Lab, her mentor, and her partners, for granting her the opportunity to intern at ISB and teaching her many new skills.
