Avni Mohan is going to be a senior next year at Interlake High School. She will complete her IB Diploma in the upcoming year. Outside of school Avni participates in school clubs such as DECA, Technovation, TSA (Technology Student Association), and GOVAA (Gender Oriented Violence Advocacy and Awareness). She enjoys spending her Sundays volunteering to teach children Hindi. In her free time, Avni enjoys painting, playing piano, photography, and paddle boarding.
Avni is currently interning in the Baliga Lab under Adrian to understand the intersection of computer science and biology through transcriptomics. She learned how to code python on the Rasberry Pi microcomputer to analyze the human genome and conduct data filtering and visualization. She has also learned a lot about the scientific research process, learning about scientific presentations, research papers, figures, and organizing computational biology projects.
Aside from science, Avni has gained important career skills in virtual communication and profile building. Her favorite part of the internship is interviewing the employees of ISB and learning about their journey and their role at ISB. Working under ISB has helped Avni realize how computer science intersects with biology. Seeing how computer science applies to different disciplines, Avni wants to pursue it in the future.
