Michael Huang is a rising senior at Newport High School. An avid badminton player and All-State violinist/violist, Michael is currently the Vice President of Newport Math Club, while also being highly involved as an officer for Newport's National Honor Society, Tri-M Music Honor Society, and Orchestra Council.
Michael was interested in ISB's internship program due its special nature of placing interns into professional labs and research environments that allowed for interns to explore real-life topics or questions actively being researched. He was extremely impressed by such a professional experience that stimulated his overall scientific and intellectual growth. Michael's work this summer has granted him an experience that stimulated his critical thinking and learning skills, and he hopes to use his time at ISB to further his own intellectual development and scientific discovery in the future.
Michael believes that his exposure to ISB's interactivity and communal learning has provided him a new outlook on science and the scientific community. ISB scientists are always exploring new ideas and interactions from a systems standpoint, allowing for a holistic outlook that promotes the high level of discovery and learning emulated by ISB itself. Michael is extremely thankful for the opportunity provided by ISB's Baliga Lab that has allowed him expand his horizons and meet scientists and learn more about real-world science in a uniquely outstanding environment unable to be replicated anywhere else.
This summer, Michael Huang delved into computational biology with Will Wick under the guidance of Adrian de Lomana and Claudia Ludwig, primarily working with Adrian on computationally investigating and analyzing ribosomal heterogeneity in Halobacterium salinarum while also working with various Halo strains in the lab with Claudia.
