{"id":127,"date":"2020-07-31T18:53:58","date_gmt":"2020-07-31T18:53:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/baliga.systemsbiology.net\/see-interns\/hs2020\/?page_id=127"},"modified":"2020-08-25T01:39:01","modified_gmt":"2020-08-25T01:39:01","slug":"for-prospective-interns","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/baliga.systemsbiology.net\/see-interns\/hs2020\/for-prospective-interns\/","title":{"rendered":"For Prospective Interns"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>These are tips and tricks that our 8 interns compiled based on our personal experiences with the application process:<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Written Application<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Identify core values\/goals\/things that ISB focuses on and then state how your experiences tie to those things and how they can help you contribute to ISB\u2019s goals<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Tie your personality into your experiences: you are more than your position!<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Show off what you have done and the impacts you have made in your past experiences\/clubs\/etc.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Identify labs and people you want to interview\/work with. Try to look at past projects to understand what is feasible and who may be an eligible mentor.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">RESEARCH! Find out everything you can about ISB, and this means going through past intern websites, ISB websites, lab pages, etc.!<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Quality &gt; Quantity, even though there is no word limit (our answers ranged from 150-1000 words)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">You can apply even if you are out-of-state!<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Telephone Interview<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">State some background about yourself\/your interests and then tie those to ISB\u2019s vision and the projects that interest you<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Identify around 1-2 projects<\/span><b> from<\/b> <b>research <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">to talk about- more than anything else they are trying to match interns and potential projects<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Connect their projects to your experience<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Have (many) questions prepared!<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Prepare a document with a series of attributes, experiences, and interests that you want to cover<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Practice answering questions, even though you don\u2019t know what you will be asked.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">It\u2019s not a test! Most of the time will be spent talking about you and your interest in ISB because they want to see why you are interested.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In-Person\/Video Interview<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Have questions prepared<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Try to be as outgoing and enthusiastic as possible (but genuine)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Don\u2019t be too modest, try to sell yourself!<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Be prepared to answer questions about your personality, not just science<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This is your first face-to-face impression, so use this opportunity to be professional: this quite literally means, dress to impress!<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Be really friendly and thank the interviewers for their time, smile, use manners, compliments, etc.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Have your interview in a place you\u2019re comfortable in so you can focus solely on your interview<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Feel free to contact any of us if you have questions!
